Frequently Asked Questions
How does the damage calculator work?
Pick an attacker and a defender, then select up to 4 moves. The calculator computes exact damage ranges at level 50 using the standard Gen 6+ formula. Results are sorted from highest to lowest damage, showing raw numbers, HP percentage, and KO chance for each move.
What settings can I adjust?
For each side: EVs (max 252 per stat, 508 total), nature, ability (filtered to the Pokémon's legal abilities), item (all battle-legal items), and stat stages (-6 to +6). Global settings: weather, terrain, screens on the defender, critical hit, spread move, burn status, and whether the defender is at full HP.
Why do my numbers differ from Pokémon Showdown's calculator?
Most likely the 'Spread move (doubles)' checkbox. VGC is a doubles format, so spread moves like Earthquake and Heat Wave deal 75% damage by default. Showdown's 'One vs One' tab shows singles damage without the spread reduction. Uncheck it to compare directly.
Which abilities are applied in the calculation?
Offensive: Huge Power, Pure Power, Adaptability, Tinted Lens, Technician, Iron Fist, Strong Jaw, Mega Launcher, Tough Claws, Punk Rock, Sheer Force, Flash Fire, Solar Power, Protosynthesis, Quark Drive, Parental Bond, and type-changing abilities (Pixilate, Aerilate, Refrigerate, Galvanize). Defensive: Thick Fat, Heatproof, Ice Scales, Fur Coat, Filter, Solid Rock, Prism Armor, Multiscale, and type immunities (Levitate, Water Absorb, Volt Absorb, etc.).
Can I transfer a team from the matchup tool?
Yes — click any cell in the matchup type grid or use the 'Damage calc' picker button. The attacker and defender are prefilled, and any loadout you've defined (moves, item, ability, nature, EVs) carries over automatically via URL parameters.
What does 'Swap attacker ↔ defender' do?
It exchanges both sides completely — species, form, nature, SP, ability, item, and stat stages. This lets you quickly check damage in the reverse direction without re-entering everything. The move selection resets since the new attacker has a different movepool.
What are Stat Points (SP) and how do they differ from EVs?
Pokémon Champions replaced EVs with Stat Points (SP). Each Pokémon has 66 SP to distribute (max 32 per stat). Internally, 1 SP = 8 EVs — so the damage formula produces equivalent results. IVs are always 31 in Champions. If you paste a Showdown set with old EVs, the import auto-converts them to SP.
